On behalf of the i-Teach author team, Roy Phipps commented: “The purpose of ‘i-Teach’ is to support many teachers – and trainee teachers – who find teaching scientific enquiry (Sc1) very challenging. These ‘i-Teach’ tools will help teachers plan whole enquiries using interactive whiteboards. The ‘i-Teach’ tools also provide real-time visual and graphical data which can be used to develop skills of predicting, interpreting and concluding, as data handling is an area in which teachers have told us they needed more support. In addition, we’ve collected some rich data from sources that many busy classroom teachers would not have time to research. We hope that this will lead to pupils gaining more confidence, improved attainment and enjoyment from this aspect of primary science and in turn lead to greater praise for all from OfSTED for this aspect of the curriculum!”

“What teachers will really value about these tools is the way that lots of unusual and different contexts are used to help children learn the skills of scientific enquiry. What's more, the activities are really engaging and stimulating”

Question: Are the 6 teaching tools such as graph stories, fair testing and problem-solving useful? Answer: The different components are all useful depending on the nature of where a lesson falls in sequence or unit. The ability to adapt factors in the exploring environments is crucial and will act as a great stumuli and discussion point. The openers and closers in themselves are great and including datahandling work (especially graph stories) is really handy for a SATs focused teacher like myself.

Question: Did you find the i-Teach Scientific Enquiry software really helps to integrate Sc1? Answer: Sometimes when I look at whiteboard software, I initially think that I'm looking for something that will do most of the teaching for me. However when I adopt the correct mindset of using software that will enhance the existing teaching of Scientific Enquiry, i-Teach really achieves this. I think teachers will need to realise that they will have to look carefully at the full nature of this software and then adapt their planning to fit it in.
