Frequently asked questions

What support does National Geographic Windows on Literacy provide to facilitate independent reading?

National Geographic Windows on Literacy provides one Independent Reading Support Book for each year. The independent reading notes on each book have been specifically written to be used by a parent or carer and focus on the main things they could do when reading a particular book with a child. One photocopy master per book provides a useful activity for follow-up work or homework.

How does National Geographic Windows on Literacy link guided and independent reading?

National Geographic Windows on Literacy links guided and independent reading in one straightforward package by offering 40 Independent Reading Books at a slightly simpler reading level than the 40 Guided Reading Books at the same Band (4 per Book Band level). Following guided reading with a book from a particular Band, children can select any independent title from the same Band, or the teacher can guide children to an appropriate book which they really will be able to read independently.

How do children progress through the programme?

National Geographic Windows on Literacy is levelled in line with Book Bands so children can start with books from the Pink Band that give them the easiest possible introduction to real non-fiction reading, with repetitive text and supportive photographs. The programme gradually introduces a growing range of genres and non-fiction features, so that by the latter Book Bands, children are gaining a broad understanding of non-fiction together with improved reading fluency.

Does National Geographic Windows on Literacy include photography from the National Geographic collection?

Yes. National Geographic Windows on Literacy includes many photographs from National Geographic’s collection of over 11 million world-renowned images. The stunning photography is combined with subjects children will really enjoy reading about.

Does National Geographic Windows on Literacy fit with the NLS objectives for non-fiction?

Yes. National Geographic Windows on Literacy links with the NLS high frequency word lists and covers a wide range of non-fiction reading practice they need to prepare them for the changing Key Stage 1 SATs.
