Accessibility Statement

Harcourt believe that the internet should be easy-to-use for everyone, including those with disabilities. All future development work carried out on Moovl will adhere to current Web Standards, as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium. The HTML pages of Moovl are written in standards-compliant XHTML and CSS. This is to ensure that the pages can be accessed by all users no matter which browser they are using, and to enable users to over-ride the default text and colour styles with an appearance of their own choosing. While the pages can still be accessed in older browsers, to see them laid-out correctly will require a standards compliant browser. If you would like to upgrade your browser we recommend the latest free versions of Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer and Netscape.

Accessibility Features of Moovl

Personalization

Children can assemble their own portfolio of work, and teachers can set up differentiated lessons for different groups of children – more or less challenging work for children at different levels of experience or ability.

Accessible learning

The nature of Moovl as a drawing tool is such that it is not suitable for users with certain disabilities (such as users with severe visual impairments or those able only to use a keyboard), but Moovl can be used with a variety of pointing devices, and the emphasis on drawing simple, graphically bold shapes makes it usable by children with low vision or dexterity problems.

Design

  • Moovl has been designed with high-contrast colours to make it easy to read.
  • Moovl does not use colour to convey critical information (WCAG guidelines 2.1 and 2.2).
  • You may over-ride the default colour scheme by using your browser's CSS controls.

Text Size

Because the text of Moovl is laid out using CSS, you may use your browser's controls to increase or decrease the size of the on-screen text to your specification.

Internet Explorer users can increase the size of text by accessing the "view" menu and selecting the "text size" option.

Firefox users can increase text by holding down "CTRL" and pressing "+", or by using the menu View > Text size.
Users of other browser may find help on this topic in their browser's help files.

Access keys

Access key "S" has been set to "Skip content", so users can avoid reading out menus on every screen.

WCAG conformance

The HTML pages of this web site are written in valid XHTML 1.0 transitional HTML and CSS. HTML pages meet most of the Priority 1 checkpoints of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, and several Priority 2 guidelines.
For example:

  • All images should have "Alt" tags. (WCAG 1.1)
  • All tables should have Summary and column header attributes. (5.5)
  • All form fields use the LABEL attribute. (10.2)
  • Link menus are split into ordered lists. (10.5)
  • All pages are properly structured and begin with a H1 heading.

About the application

The Moovl drawing engine is written in Java. It will not work with a keyboard only – a mouse, graphics pen or other pointing device must be used for drawing
