Digitexts Technical Product FAQs
Symptom(s):
Windows Server 2000 and 2003 only
After configuring the shared data folder, you are unable to add users through the program. You are presented with the below error
"Error: User was NOT added to the database"
Cause:
This error appears to be a permissions issue.
Resolution:
Create a sub-directory within the shared folder. Open the Digitext title and click Set-up. Enter the administrative name and password (found in your documentation), and click on 'Global Settings'. Click on the shared path text, and add the new folder name to the end of the path.
Alternatively, map the drive, or make the share administrative - e.g. \\server\share$|

Symptom(s):
Is there any possible way to use a bulk upload of users feature, as manually adding pupils is time consuming and prone to errors.
Cause:
Unfortunately the program does not have bulk-upload feature.
Resolution:
You should prepare in advance a list of user first/last names, passwords (optional) and year group/class (optional - for sorting only).
PC users can then download this ZIP file: CDMS_Upload.zip |
Once you have extracted the components, open the Excel Workbook and follow the instructions on the 'Instructions' sheet.
The process of upload is:
1. You add user details into Excel columns.
2. The worksheet creates code around the user name.
3. You copy the new code into an index XML file.
4. You copy additional code into a batch (BAT) file to create pupil directories.
5. You run the BAT file - which creates the required folder structures.
6. You copy additional code into a second BAT file which populates the pupil folders with the required data.
7. You run the second BAT file to complete the upload.
8. You must post-process the pupil xml files to strip out instances of " (to replace with ) and " (to replace with . Tools for this may include Smultron (Mac) or EditPlus (PC).
Alternatively, you may send us a password-protected Excel document for us to process for you - please contact us at schools.cd-romhelpdesk@pearson.com for details and CRB references if required.
9. Copy the files and folder structure to your shared location.
Please note: This process does NOT check for pre-existing users, or merge with existing data. You should back-up any previous user data before proceeding. Check for duplication by manually merging the pupil folders before adjusting and manually merging the old and new pupil index XML file.

Symptom(s):
The shared data setting is lost when another user logs onto the PC. The problem presents itself when launching the Digitext in the form of a dialogue box stating that the shared data folder has not been set up. The user is advised to seek a teacher or the administrator.
Cause:
Macromedia Flash uses a bespoke shared object library to store this data. Due to the security constraints placed upon Flash objects, it is created in a unique location that cannot be simply copied to the 'All users' profile.
Resolution:
Download the appropriate zip file by clicking on the links below and extract the files into the application directory replacing the following files:
-
PeakAdventures.exe (example name)
-
PeakAdventures.ini (example name)
-
kd1.swf
-
main.swf
In addition, ensure that sharedpath.xml is placed into the config folder.
Please Note: Perform a file-search on the affected machines to locate and delete instances of 'kdtest1.sol'. This file will be re-created with the correct version when running the product again.
