Downloading files and resources

Q: Downloading files

On many parts of the heinemann.co.uk website you will find resources to download. These may be free resources to use alongside the products you've bought from us, they may be patches for software, or they may be paid-for PDF resources, usually extra units from a core title.

Files available for download are displayed by filename and size, along with a logo to show what type of file they are.

Depending on your computer and operating system, there are two common ways to download a file.

  • If you left-click the file you want, your computer will either try to open the file immediately, or will prompt you to save the file onto your hard-disc.
  • Alternatively, you may right-click the file, and select "Save As..." from the menu of options. You will then be prompted to select a location on your computer to save your file to.

Different file types

These are the most commonly used file types used on this website:

PDF image  PDF: Portable Document Format.

This is the most common file type found on our website. To open these files, all you need is the free PDF reader from Adobe Acrobat. Visit their website |and follow their instructions on how to install.
File extension: .pdf

If the file fails to open, the most common solution is to upgrade your copy of Acrobat Reader to version 5. If you are prompted for a password, then the file you have downloaded is a protected resource that belongs to a specific book title. You will need the password from the relevant  book to open the file.

Word doc image Word file.

This document can be opened in Microsoft Word|, which is a common word processing programme supplied with many computers.

File extension: .doc

If you have problems opening a Word file, the most common reason is that your version of Word is older than the version used to create the file. You might need to update your version in order to view the file.

zip image Zip archive.

To open a zip archive, you'll need an up-to-date version of WinZip, which is freely available from the winzip website|. Zip files can be password protected: if you are prompted for one when opening the file, refer to the book you found the link in.
File extension: .zip

Other file types:
Exe image An executable file.

Double-click to open.
File extension: .exe

mbd image A database file.

You'll need Microsoft Access or another database programme for this to work.
File extension: .mdb

ppt image Powerpoint presentation.

This is another Microsoft file.
File extension: .ppt

txt image Text document.

This file can be opened by nearly every computer, and contains plain text.
File extension: .txt

xls image Excel spreadsheet.

You will need a up-to-date copy of Microsoft Excel to open these.
File extension: .xls

swf image Flash file.

You will need the Flash player, freely available from the Adobe website|. If you are having problems viewing a flash file, the most common problem is that you have an old version of the player. Simply visit the website to download the latest version.

File extension: .swf

jpeg image  Image file.
Many different programmes can open this type of document.
File extensions: .gif, .jpg, .tiff, .bmp

Problems with downloading files

Having problems downloading files?

The most common reason is that you do not have the correct programme installed to read the downloaded file. Read the "different file types" section to find out what the appropriate programme is. If you do have the correct programme installed, make sure that it is updated to the most recent version of the software. For instance, Acrobat Reader 5 may not be able to open files created in Acrobat 6.

NETSCAPE USERS: If the filename of the PDF contains spaces (E.g."http://www.heinemann.co.uk/resources/maths resources.pdf") then netscape may have problems locating the file.
You can try fixing this by putting in "%20" in place of any spaces, like so:
We apologize for this and are working on renaming our files so this stops being a problem.

Q: The file asks me for a password!

A: Some files are password protected, particularly PDFs. This is done if the file is only intended for the users of a certain book. You will need the password from the relevant  book to open the file.

Searching

Using the search

You can find the website search in the top right hand corner of the website. You can use this search the site on product titles, ISBNs, keywords, author names etc.

Finding old and new ISBNs

Due to a recent change in the publishing industry, all product ISBN numbers are changing from 10 digits to 13 digits. In future only 13 digits will be printed on our products. But don't worry if you have an older title with a 10 digit ISBN - if you need to find it on the portal you can still search using the 10 digit ISBN and find your product.

Having problems with some of our online software demonstrations?

Here's a couple of things to check.

1. Flash

To view our demos properly, you will need the latest version of Flash. You can download the latest Flash reader FREE here|. This solves most problems, so please try this first.

2. Launching files

In some of our demos, you will click on a link or button to launch a file (eg Word, Powerpoint, PDF). If your page just re-loads when you do this, and nothing happens, try holding down your control key as you hit the link/button. Some computers block the file from launching, but holding down the control key should solve the problem.

3. Trusted sites

In some computer systems, you will need to set us up as a trusted site to view our demos properly. The instructions below describe how to do this on Internet Explorer 6, but most internet browsers are similar.

Open your browser, and click on Tools, then Internet Options
